The History of Crochet

 

Crochet dates back to the early 19th century and is believed to have originated in South America, where artifacts using basic crochet techniques have been found that are estimated at being over 2,000 years old. A form of early crochet was also practiced by Islamic nations, using thin metal wire to form intricate patterns. It wasn’t until the 19th century that crocheting as we know it today began to take shape. The invention of the steel crochet hook allowed artisans to quickly create intricate patterns and lace-like textiles very different from the traditional fabric. It was quickly popularized in Europe and later spread across the globe.
